Learning outcome

Students will be able to:

• Document the learning processes and the design processes used in the portfolio assignments.
• Cast plaster moulds.
• Clay and plaster moulds.
• Construct structures and reliefs in clay.
• Acquire knowledge of treating surfaces.
• Develop different types of decoration, impressions and textural techniques.
• Acquire knowledge of glazing techniques and gain experience in experimenting with glazing.
• Acquire knowledge of the health issues in using clay and glazes and implement safety procedures. Students should be familiar with data sheets and the content of materials used.
• Work with form and composition in relation to free three-dimensional expressions.
• Acquire knowledge of modelling, construction and casting techniques.
• Acquire an overview of Norwegian and international sculpture.
• Working with clay as a means of expression and communication.

Course Description

The course includes three-dimensional work in clay with images and sculpture, and work in the area between images and utility objects. Students will gain experience with the expressive and communicative possibilities of clay.

The course will emphasize experimentation and training in modelling forms and developing an understanding of form. Surface structures and relief effects will be focused on.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching will be carried out in the school’s pottery workshop, which will include an introduction, seminars, and tutorials. Students are expected to put in considerable effort in the workshop.

Assessment Methods

A grade will be given from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade. Please refer to Telemark University College’s Examination Regulations for more information.
