Learning outcome

  • Students will become acquainted with the development of the institution of art, and they will acquire insight into the history of pictorial art and architecture from 1750 and the present
  • Students will acquire knowledge concerning the principal epochs and trends within the various art forms
  • The course will provide students with knowledge concerning the changing concept of art, and relations between art and society
  • Emphasis will be given to analysing the form and content of works of art considered in a cultural and social context.

Course Description

The course provides an introduction to European and Norwegian history og art and architecture from 1750 to the present, and includes the following topics:

  • The emergence of art as an institution
  • Principal epochs and trends in pictorial art, handicrafts and architecture, including a brief consideration of folk art, music and literature
  • The role of art and the artist in society
  • Principal theories regarding the analysis of pictorial art
  • Policies regarding Norwegian art and artists

Assessment Methods

Obligatory home assignment which counts for 30 % of the final grade. 5-hour written final examination which counts for 70 % of the final grade. Graded marks. Students must receive passing grades in the obligatory coursework and both parts of the assessment in order to achieve passing grade for the course.
