Fra antikken til renessansen 3328

Learning outcome

  • Broad knowledge of important idea currents from ancient Greece to the 17th century, in particular major currents within philosophical, political, religious and aesthetic contexts.
  • Broad knowledge of important texts and persons from the above mentioned period and contexts.
  • Ability to interpret materials from the above mentioned period both as an expression of past ideas and a source of present world views.

Course Description

The students work on materials from several contexts, such as philosophy, religion and the arts. Making visible relations within and between the contexts is a primary task throughout the course. The syllabus contains both primary and secondary sources, where the main emphasis is on the primary sources. The texts are in English and Norwegian.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The teaching will be organised as lectures of altogether six hours a week during the first half of the fall semester. Multimedia (film, music, pictures) will be used when relevant.

Assessment Methods

The mid-term evaluation in the course will be organised as a written, 4-hour examen that counts 40 percent of the final mark. The concluding, written 5-hour exam counts 60 percent. Both of these tests need a pass mark in order for the student to pass the course, and in both cases marks will be given on a scale from A to F, where E is the lowest pass mark, and F is a fail.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
