Høgspenningsteknikk EK5412

Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate can:

  • Explain penetration mechanisms in gases and solids
  • Explain the functioning and structure of the following high voltage electrical system components: metal oxide conductors, switches, fuses and cables

Skills

The candidate:

  • Can calculate lightning voltage in high voltage electricity networks using a travelling wave model
  • Can calculate voltages, electric field strength and potentials using computer programs or by hand
  • Can carry out work on high voltage electrical installations in accordance with regulations
  • Has completed safety training for working with high voltage installations

Course Description

The course describes and explains lightning surges and their effects on electrical grids using travelling wave models and reflection diagrams. Temporary and switched overvoltages will also be focused on. High voltage components such as cables, fuses, circuit breakers and surge arresters will also be discussed. The physical processes with regard to the penetration mechanisms in gases and solids will also be discussed and explained. Relevant computer programs for calculating complex geometries and lightning voltages will be reviewed.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The learning outcomes will be ensured through a combination of lectures, exercises, excursions and laboratory work.

Assessment Methods

Continuous assessment: Computer-exercises and laboratory work (30%)
Final written examination (70%)

Students must receive a passing grade in both continuous assessment and the final examination in order to receive a final course grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
