Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

The candidate:

  • Has knowledge of different materials, tools, techniques and other aesthetic means, both analogue and digital
  • Is able to evaluate quality, suitability and use of various tools related to varied work with images, graphic design and visual communication
  • Has knowledge of the main features of the historical development of international art, graphic design and visual communication in recent times
  • Is able to document a creative process related to relevant theory
  • Has knowledge of main theories of visual forms of expression of children’s culture (with a focus on Years 5 – 10)
  • Has basic knowledge about entrepreneurship and innovation

Skills

The candidate:

- Can use digital tools and applications

- Has comprehensive experience in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the form, content and presentation style of physical and digital presentations and exhibitions

- Can use knowledge and experience of entrepreneurship and innovation

General competence
The candidate:

- Is familiar with the documentation of a creative process related to relevant theory and practice and can use this to reflect on didactic skills

Course Description

Course 1: Images, Graphic Design and Visual Communication

Part 1: Art orientation and working with images using specific techniques

Part 2: Graphic design and visual communication

Entrepreneurship and innovation constitute an integral part of the course.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Online part-time course including group meetings on campus. It includes a 3-day workshop at the Notodden campus in addition to teaching in real time online.

Teaching and mentoring methods - both in groups and individually - in real time via the learning platform Nefsis, about 3 hours per week and via Fronter with online classroom discussion forums, online meetings, writing posts and presentations, submissions etc. The group meetings will focus on activities in the workshop involving training in using tools and machines, as well as group projects that focus on creative processes. Students will also be given a thorough introduction to the online learning platform Nefsis and the use of Fronter.

Students will mainly work independently and in groups with online guidance given by the course teacher.

The course is characterized by alternation between practical creative work, theory and didactic reflection.

Compulsory study trips may be carried out during the group meetings.

The relationship between theory and practice

Professional development in the student’s school is a mandatory part of the study programme for students enrolled on a teacher education study programme.

The relationship between creative work, theory and didactic reflection is emphasized.

The students’ own professional practice will be used as a testing ground and basis of reflection.

Assessment Methods

Coursework

4-5 submissions and two counselling sessions.

A minimum of 80% attendance must be fulfilled in order to take the examination.

Students are responsible for keeping themselves up to date concerning coursework requirements and deadlines.

Final assessment

All coursework requirements must be approved before the final assessment at the end of each semester.

Students must submit a portfolio assignment (before the deadline) consisting of selected portions of previously submitted work in addition to a new assignment.

The portfolio will be assessed on a grade scale A-F, where E represents the lowest passing grade.
