Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

• Chronic, complex and long-term functional impairment in people receiving home care services
• How complex illnesses affect people’s ability to cope to take care of their basic needs in their own homes
• How the organization, frameworks, legislation and health policy priorities affect nursing practice in relation to target groups in home care services

Skills

The candidate can:

• Integrate knowledge from the natural sciences and social sciences in nursing practice in relation to target groups who receive home care services

• Assess the relationship between human health, illness, living conditions and culture
• Work using evidence-based practice
• Master nursing’s problem-solving approach in relation to patients who receive home care services
• Take care of patients and their families with the aim of strengthening their ability to cope
• Take responsibility for supervising and delegating work for a group of colleagues/students
• Master the appropriate communication skills in interactions with patients, families and professionals
• Master professionally appropriate nursing documentation
• Master basic and specialized nursing skills with accuracy, attention and dexterity
• Master the management of medication correctly and safely, and document efficacy and side effects
  

General competence

The candidate can:

• Follow professional ethical guidelines, applicable laws and regulations and exchange views on relevant choices of action
• Assess with others about how the organization, frameworks, legislation and health policy priorities affect nursing practices in home care services
• Assess and clarify nursing knowledge in professional, interdisciplinary and inter-departmental cooperation
• Assess their own learning needs and continually seek and receive guidance
• Gain insight into regulations for health, safety and environment (HSE) and how these regulations affect the quality of work practices

Course Description

Clinical studies - 8 weeks - home nursing with a focus on the integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes related to:

• The patient
• The nurse
• Interaction
• Context

Teaching and Learning Methods

Clinical studies - 8 weeks of home nursing; demonstration – practical training - case studies - guidance - reflection.

Assessment Methods

Clinical studies, 8 weeks in home nursing - assessed on a pass/fail basis.

All clinical courses must have received passing grades.
