Learning outcome
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge
The candidate has:
- Knowledge of research in the field of values, learning and leadership.
- Gained insights into the actualization of types of knowledge, values and leadership in the areas of sport, physical education and outdoor recreation, and is able to relate these insights to pedagogical and epistemological issues.
Skills
The candidate:
- Can analyse complex issues related to values, learning and leadership in sport, physical education and outdoor recreation, and make these accessible via a research-based approach.
General competence
The candidate:
- Is able through the course, and other instruction in their Masters studies, to conduct research and development within practical pedagogical activities in sport/physical education/outdoor recreation.
Course Description
The specialisation course examines educational and psychological themes. The central question is: How can we, through educational activities, establish good (including morally good) learning environments and contribute to the creation of well-functioning relationships (coach - athlete, teacher - pupil, and effective teams)?
- Development of sport psychology and sports coaching as disciplines related to sport, physical education and outdoor recreation.
- Learning and socialization theory with an emphasis on motivation, mastery and the social learning environment, used in our professional and practice areas.
- Group processes related to sport, physical education and outdoor recreation.
- Mental training, visualization, inner dialogue, motivation and tension regulation.
- Pedagogy in sport, physical education and outdoor recreation, and sport, physical education and outdoor recreation as pedagogical tools.
- The gap between theory and practice in sport, physical education and outdoor recreation.
- The concept of knowledge. Theoretical knowledge, embodied knowledge and action-dependent knowledge. Episteme, techne and phronesis. Pedagogy as a systematic value system.
- Coach, coach/leader and the supervisor’s practical competence to act. Practice theory. Reflection on one’s own role and practice.
- Democratic learning models. Involvement in educational leadership, opportunities and limitations.
- Communication, relationships and power in a learning perspective, related to sport, physical education and outdoor recreation.
Students will learn to interpret, understand and criticise theory-based research within the above fields, and to understand the relationships between the theories, research and the development of practical intervention techniques.
Teaching and Learning Methods
15 lecture sessions of three to four hours’ duration in the spring semester. The course will be organised as a seminar but includes elements of lectures, student presentations, discussions and group work.
Assessment Methods
One-week home examination assessed with a grade; 60% of the final grade.
The oral examination assessed with a grade; 40% of the final grade.
The course requires 75% compulsory attendance.
