Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate has:

  • Basic knowledge of key sociological concepts and the application of these in relation to sports and outdoor activities. This applies particularly to the five concepts that the course is structured around: identity, globalization, gender, socialization and institutionalization
  • Knowledge of some selected sociological theoretical perspectives

Skills

The candidate can:

  • Carry out independent social analyses of phenomena within the sports and outdoor recreation field, particularly with regard to their respective areas of specialization

General competence

The candidate has:

  • A critical insight into social and political processes related to the area of sports and outdoor recreation area and an understanding of social and cultural patterns and opposites in the field

Course Description

The course examines and discusses the following five concepts: Identity, socialisation, institutionalisation, gender and globalisation. All these concepts will be related to observations and analyses within the field of sport and outdoor activities. There are disagreements about the meaning and usage of these terms. We intend to demonstrate how different approaches and perspectives tend to influence what we choose to examine and the interpretations of empirical data. Understanding of a concept may also provide input to the analysis and use of other concepts.

Teaching and Learning Methods

40 hours of lectures. Students will work in groups of 2 or 3 on their group assignments.

Assessment Methods

Submission of a group assignment (2,000 words per group member), counts for 40 %.

The final individual oral examination counts for 60 %.

Grades: A-F.

All components must receive a passing mark in order to achieve a passing mark for the course.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
