Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

The candidate has gained an introduction to strategic analysis, leadership and approaches, enabling him/her to participate in strategic processes in an organisation. The knowledge the candidate has acquired in this course is built on knowledge and skills from other business administration courses, so that he/she understands the various disciplines in relation to each other.

The candidate:

- Has knowledge of the term ‘strategy’ in a historical perspective

- Has knowledge of the how strategies can help achieve the goals of value creation, efficiency and profitability

- Has knowledge of strategic processes and perspectives, including leadership perspectives

- Has knowledge of the theories and assumptions that strategic tools are based on

- Has knowledge of group strategies and strategic business areas

- Has knowledge of strategic marketing, differentiation, selection of target groups, positioning, profiling and e-strategies

- Can use key strategic tools, and through this work make reflective analyses and choices

- Can carry out a strategic analysis of an organisation, with a focus on both ambient and market factors and the organisation’s internal resources

- Can apply and integrate relevant models and analyses from other business administration subjects in the study programme; strategic analysis will be carried out using the steps in the strategy process

- Has knowledge of strategy in a dynamic environment, innovation and learning

- Has knowledge of social responsibility and ethics

Course Description

The course will cover the following topics:

- Strategy processes – the strategic leadership process

- Vision, business ideas, values and aims

- Strategic business field

- Strategy analyses (external factors – environments, internal factors – resources) and strategic opportunities

- Differentiation, selection of target groups, positioning and profiling as well as portfolio analyses

- Strategy evaluations and choice

- Group strategies

- Strategies and ethics

Teaching and Learning Methods

3-4 hours lectures per week in the spring semester.

Assessment Methods

The student must complete case-study work on an approved topic and carry out evaluations in connection with this work. The work will be done in groups and submitted, but the subject teacher may also accept individual work. The work carried out must be documented in written form. The other part of the assessment is a final written examination with no examination aids permitted, 3 hours. Each part of the assessment counts for 50%. The student must achieve passing grades in both parts of the assessment in order to achieve a passing grade for the course.
