Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

The candidate

  • Is familiar with basic English grammar terminology
  • Can use grammar terminology with respect to linguistic examples
  • Is able to apply theoretical knowledge in writing correct and idiomatic English
  • Can analyse English language at the word, phrase and sentence levels
  • Is familiar with the relationship between word order and information structure
  • Is familiar with the most common grammatical errors made by Norwegian pupils
  • Has knowledge of the comparative aspects of English and Norwegian grammar

Course Description

The course will provide a general introduction to grammatical structures and how the English language is organized.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The teaching is organised ias lectures and seminars, with altogether 4 hours per week. In the lectures, the individual themes will be clarified and examined. In the seminar lessons, the students will be given the opportunity to work with exercises on specific themes, and take part in discussions. An attendance rate of at least 75 per cent is required for the seminars

Assessment Methods

The final written examination will be assessed on a scale from A to F, where E is the lowest pass mark, and F is a fail. An attendance rate of at least 75% in the seminars is required to sit the final exam.

It is a prerequisite for the completion of the course that the students hand in two written papers. The papers are not graded, but must be approved by the course instructor.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
