Learning outcome

A candidate who has passed the course will have a learning outcome in the form of acquired knowledge, skills, and general competence, as described below.

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • masters the terminology of combustion
  • has detailed knowledge in combustion theory
  • has knowledge in thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and oxidation mechanisms of fuels

Skills

The candidate will be able to:

  • estimate chemical equilibrium, reaction rates, adiabatic flame temperature, laminar flame structures, ignition energy, droplet combustion, jet flames, gas explosions and detonations
  • apply the combustion theory in experiments and technical projects
  • find, analyze and critically review different sources of information in combustion

General competence

The candidate is able to:

  • analyze combustion challenges in general
  • apply acquired knowledge and skills to solve advanced tasks and projects in new areas such as chemical reactor design, safety and CFD
  • communicate and discuss - with experts as well as with the general public - technical problems, analyses and conclusions within the area of combustion, energy and environment
  • take part in and contribute to creative thinking and innovation

Course Description

The course deals with fundamental aspects of combustion and combustion theory. The course consists of the following topics:

  • Chemical thermodynamics and kinetics
  • Transport phenomena
  • Conservation equations
  • Laminar premixed and non-premixed flames
  • Limited phenomena
  • Aymptotic structure of flames
  • Aerodynamics of laminar flames and combustion in turbulent flows
  • Boundary layers
  • Two-phase flows and supersonic flows

Teaching and Learning Methods

Lectures and exercises are used.

Assessment Methods

Oral examination (counts 100 %).

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
