Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • Has a thorough understanding and knowledge of key sports policy issues
  • Has an understanding of how sports and outdoor activities are organized in the public and private sectors
  • Can reflect upon the relationship between theory and practice in relation to teaching and practical/theoretical tasks
  • Has insight into the economy, and knowledge of elementary bookkeeping and accounting in sport.

Skills

The candidate:

  • Has the ability to critically analyse various aspects of sports policy issues
  • Can express themselves orally and in writing through discussions and in-depth topics
  • Is aware of the importance of completing assignments through specific tasks in teaching and practical situations.

General competence

The candidate has the ability to:

  • Carry out thorough case processing according to applicable laws and regulations
  • Reflect on current sports policy issues
  • Understand the relationship between theory and practice.

Course Description

The course emphasizes the following:

  • Knowledge of key institutions in Norway that are related to sports and outdoor activities
  • Case processing procedures
  • Types of government funding for sports and outdoor recreation
  • Sport in the context of volunteering
  • Sport in the context of the commercial market
  • The relationship between sport, physical activity and health
  • Financial management with an emphasis on basic accounting and budgeting

The course is based on research related to the relevant expertise of the teaching staff.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course consists of lectures, obligatory visits, sports policy assignments and a study trip. The course is mainly comprised of lectures. In addition, visits provide students with the opportunity to experience how various sports and outdoors activities are organised. Students will also be given the opportunity to attend suitable seminars and conferences.

The course also includes specialization assignments and tutoring. Active student participation in discussions and meetings will be emphasized.

Assessment Methods

Four hour written examination in finance and budgeting (counts for 30 of grade%).

Specialization in a self-chosen sport policy topic (counts for 30%) with a subsequent oral examination (counts for 40%).

Visit report: pass/fail.

Practical training report: pass/fail.

All assignments and reports must receive passing marks before the student will be permitted to take the oral examination.

Students need only re-take the examination in which they have received a failing mark.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
