Course Description

The student will carry out engineering work experience in an organization under the guidance of supervisor(s). The engineering internship may be carried out in an organization in the private or public sector.

The internship should be related to one or more subject areas described in the curriculum, and the student will usually carry out engineering work related to this subject area. It is expected that development work will be an element of the engineering internship.

The student is responsible for establishing contact with an organization and must make suggestions regarding the content of their engineering internship. Telemark University College (TUC) must approve the content of the engineering internship and other conditions of the internship. This will be determined in an internship agreement between TUC, the student and the organization.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course includes the following activities:

  • Planning the engineering internship in partnership with an organization, as well as drafting an internship plan.
  • Identify the organization’s goals, its structure, tasks, conditions and culture.
  • Engineering work in the organization.
  • Continuous reporting (log) of executed tasks, time used and learning.
  • Draft an engineering internship report summarizing the content of the internship and what they have learnt.
  • Presentation of their engineering internship for other students and businesses.

The following documents define the execution of the course:

  • Supervision of the engineering internship.
  • The internship agreement between TUC, the student and the organization concerning the content and execution of the internship.
  • More detailed internship plan drafted by the student and the organization in partnership in the initial phase.

The execution of the engineering internship:

  • The engineering internship is flexible and can be agreed upon between the student and the organization. The internship usually starts before the start of the semester and must be completed before the examination period.
  • The time needed to perform specific engineering tasks will be in excess of 20 days.
  • The semester timetable will probably not allow for whole days to be reserved for this course, and it is probable that it may clash with the teaching of other courses.

Assessment Methods

Continuous reporting is mandatory and must be signed by the supervisor in the organization where the student is doing his/her internship. In the case of failure to meet this reporting requirement, it will be assessed whether the student can be allowed to continue the course.

  • An individual grade will be given: pass or fail.
  • All the elements of the assessment must receive passing marks.
  • Participation in the presentation is mandatory.

The basis of the assessment is:

  • The internship report
  • The internship plan
  • Continuous reporting

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
