5403 Tourism Destination Development

Course Objectives

The main aim of the course is to examine the special characteristics of the various types of tourist destinations and the key elements that contribute to the successful development of a destination.

Course Description

The course will provide students with a thorough introduction to various problems related to the development of tourist destinations. An examination of tourist destinations, and the key aspects of their development up to the present, will be conducted. An essential part of the course will be how nature and cultural heritage may be used in the promotion and development of a tourist destination. The theme of city culture will also be examined. The development of complimentary products will also be focused on, and the course will particularly emphasise the destinations and the interactions between private and public players. An introduction to various forms of communication between tourism products and tourism markets will also be given. The consequences of destination development for local communities will also be discussed.

Learning Methods

4 hours of lectures per week in the autumn and spring semesters. The instruction will vary between traditional lectures, seminars, project work, practical assignments, student presentations, written reports and submitted work.

Assessment Methods

Portfolio assessment with individual work (25%), a group assignment (15%) and a final written individual examination, 4 hours (60%). Students must receive passing marks on all parts of the assessment.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
