3302 Art and Cultural History
Course Objectives
The students will gain basic knowledge and insight into Norwegian and European history of culture and art from 1750 to the present. They will learn to discuss cultural themes in the context of contemporary society. They will also acquire knowledge concerning the principal epochs and trends within the various art forms, and the role of art in society. Students will also learn how ideas and conceptions are expressed through art.
Course Description
The course provides an introduction to European and Norwegian art and cultural history from 1750 to 2005, and includes the following topics:
Economic and social changes
Principal characteristics of social interaction and cooperation in villages and towns
Ideas and conceptions
Development of principal art and cultural institutions
The role of art and the artist in society
Principal epochs and trends in pictorial art, architecture, music and literature
Learning Methods
Lectures, group work, study trips spread over 2 semesters.
Assessment Methods
Obligatory written assignment which counts for 30 % of the final grade. 5-hour written final examination which counts for 70 % of the final grade. Graded marks.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
