KJ4106 Separation and Thermal Engineering, and using HYSYS
Course Objectives
To become familiar with the most common techniques which are used to separate liquids, gasses and solids, and to be able to dimension and calculate these processes manually and by using HYSYS. To learn about the most important reactor models which are used in the process industry, and be able to dimension and calculate their capacities.
Course Description
Introduction to HYSYS
Separation techniques:
Basic theory
- Survey of mass transfer processes, diffusion
Liquid/solid separation
- Sedimentation, hydrocyclones, filtering, evaporation, crystallisation
Gas/solid separation
- Mechanical dust removal, gas scrubbing, filters, cyclones
Liquid/liquid separation
- Distillation, rectification, multi-component rectification, extraction
Gas/gas separation
- Absorption, adsorption
Other cleaning techniques
- Ion exchange, membrane separation
Thermal engineering:
Stationary heat transfer
- Conduction, convection, radiation, boiling, condensation
Heat-exchangers
- Dimensioning and uses
- Mediums for heat transport
Learning Methods
Lectures, assignments and the use of PC tools.
Assessment Methods
Final written examination (40 %). Continuous assessment (60 %). The method of assessment is described in more detail in Classfronter, which the students may access when they begin the course
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
