Peace Building and Conflict Management 2603

Læringsmål

The students will gain a deeper understanding of processes for peacebuilding and conflict managament by combinig theory and practice. The course is open to Norwegian students, thereby promoting interaction between students from different cultures.

Innhold

The course will focus on processes of conflict management from the interpersonal to the international level with a special focus on intervention and the role of the intermediary in conflict. The course will explore different conceptualizations and understanding of peace, the role of the intermediary, the nature of contemporary international conflict, reconciliation, and conflict management processes such as negotiation, mediation, and facilitation.Students will also study the Nobel Peace Prize and explore different understandings of peace through writing a paper on a self-chosen Nobel Peace Prize winner and through a mandatory excursion to Oslo on December 10th in connection with the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize

Organisering

Lectures, simulations, role plays, discussions, a mandatory excursions, papers and reading. The language of instruction is English.
2-3 hrs/week, 8 weeks per semester, autumn semester.

Vurderingsformer

Portfolio including: Two 3-5-page papers counts 40%, a take home final examination counts 40% and attendance and class participation (min 80%) + a log counts 20%. All assessed elements of the course must be passed to pass the course.
