Environmental Arts - "Formgiving" and Sloyd, årsstudium
Innledning
This study programme is for English-speaking students studying Teacher Education from countries all over the world (including Norway). The language of instruction in English, but some Norwegian will also be used.
During the study programme students will mainly work outdoors with installations, buildings, objects and sculptures. They will use areas in the mountains and a nearby lake not far from the university college campus. The study programme will examine terms such as “green art”, “sustainable design” and “post carbon arts and crafts”.

Mål for studieprogrammet
The healing of and the relationship with the natural world is an important and vital question for many young people in the world today. This statement draws on the views of young people as represented in protest marches during G20 Meetings, and environmental conferences in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1992; Kyoto, Japan, 1997; and Copenhagen, Denmark, 2009. Throughout history, human beings have sought meaning and aesthetic values in life; however, in the contemporary world questions concerning sustainable living are also very important, and have relevance for activities and topics in art, design and sloyd. One of the aims of the study programme is to reuse, reduce and recycle in the making process; students will also be encouraged to develop a sense of place and context during their practical work on each project.

Students who successfully complete the courses may use this qualification as part of a teacher education degree (both art and crafts teachers and general teachers).

Obligatory courses
“Formgiving” (“design”) is a Norwegian word which refers to the conceptual and perceptual process of developing the product’s gestalt into a physical form through an integrated aesthetic process.
“Sloyd”, as it is used in the English language, refers to a system of training developed in Scandinavia based on creative use of crafts in an educational context.
“Sustainable” as a concept is understood in this study programme to mean the importance of economic questions related to making a living, the process of making products and their durability, and the next generations’ continued ability to make a good living for themselves.
The study programme consists of four courses. The Institute will select two of the courses each year; in other words, students will study courses comprising a total of 30 ECTS each year. The first study programme will commence January 2011, and the first semester will begin with course 3 and then move on to course 1.
Course 1 (15 ECTS) Art in Nature I (spring)
Course 2 (15 ECTS) Scandinavian Sustainable Formgiving and Sloyd (not taught in the first year)
Course 3 (15 ECTS) Art in Nature II (winter)
Course 4 (15 ECTS) “Eco-Art”. The Contemporary Art Movement and Ecological Activism (not taught in the first year)

Telemark University College is situated in the eastern part of Norway. During the study programme students will mainly work outdoors with installations, buildings, objects and sculptures. They will use areas in the mountains and a nearby lake not far from the university college campus. The study programme will examine terms such as “green art”, “sustainable design” and “post-carbon arts and crafts”. One of the aims of the study programme is to reuse, reduce and recycle in the making process; students will also be encouraged to develop a sense of place and context during their practical work with each project.
Students will participate in collaborative projects on a large scale. The intervention context will often concern learning about a place, a craft or an issue and finding a creative opportunity to do something about it through the making process. Practice and nature are the starting points for the learning process.
Forholdet mellom teori/praksis
The subject material is presented in the form of student work and teacher-guided and student-guided lectures. The subject material is related to the students’ own learning experiences.
Reliance on human ingenuity, defined as the aptitude to solve problems through experience using originality and imagination, will be a preferred method of teaching. From the students’ perspective their positions will range from that of an activist concerned with conceptual ideas to that of an artist working constructively with forms in nature with natural materials. All processes must be documented and include didactic reflection. This will then be presented to other students on the web and/or in the University College’s galleries using video/photography.
Vurderingsformer
The grade for the study programme will be based on portfolio assessment. The final assessment will be made after all obligatory requirements have been satisfactorily completed.
A single final grade is recorded on the diploma, ranging from A to F, where A is the highest grade, and E is the lowest passing grade. Students must receive a passing mark in each course in order to receive a passing grade for the study programme as a whole.
