2099 Social Sciences

Innledning

Participants in this program will gain competence with regard to dealing with the dynamics that shape socialization in contemporary societies. Classical subjects of the social sciences such as changing cultures and identities will be part of the program along with topics related to more recent research into human-nature interactions and the role of place in learning, socializations and in social conflicts.

The courses are targeted at a mix of international students and they will focus on the integration of their different cultural backgrounds. We will use this mixed background to approach and analyse Norwegian society, its development and its current integration into the world at large. The Scandinavian welfare state and the significance of the human–nature relation in Norway will be areas of investigation.

The programm is organised in two courses, each including three parts, with 15 ECTS per course and 30 ECTS for the complete program.

Målgruppe og opptakskrav

The program is mainly targeted at education students (secondary schools) with a focus on the social sciences – providing knowledge and skills for those who are shaping the leaders of tomorrow. However, participation is also possible for other interested students from subject areas such as sociology or human geography.

Command of the English language is required, along with general knowledge about social science at a higher secondary school level. Students who do not meet this requirement are responsible for an adequate preparation on their own accord.

Mål for studieprogrammet

In the two social science courses that we offer for foreign students, you will learn to better understand how mobility, a changing welfare regime, and socialization on an individual level interact and how they together shape the schools and the societies of the 21st century. You will also study how landscapes and cultural practices interact and how these concrete interactions can become resources in research and teaching the role of place in a wide range of settings. For more detailed information please see the individual course descriptions.

Internasjonalisering

The different national backgrounds of our students will be used to generate a multi-perspective understanding of pressing global issues such as mobility and migration, distribution of resources, and sustainability and the role of the local in a globalized world.

Arbeids- og læringsformer

In both courses, we will encounter experts in the field, do studies of local communities and make excursions to places of significant and cultural social importance, so that you will get first-hand experience and insights into how to make society and the social relevant for your future students. In addition, we will use and discuss up-to-date research in class both in traditional print format and with film, video, and internet based technologies. As part of the program, you will be able to choose between school practice in a Norwegian school or doing qualitative field work.

Vurderingsformer

Both courses will require their participants to write essays discussing the literature used in the course. In addition, we will have the following course-specific requirements (1/3 of the final grade for each):

  • written exam
  • oral exam
  • research / practice report.

These three exams will result in a single grade. The grade scale is from A – F, each course (15 ECTS) will result in one combined grade.

For both modules: Designated parts of the program are mandatory, as will be stated in the syllabus.
