  • key scientific theories and perspectives within cultural policy research and cultural economics practice and the ability to identify and reflect on how such perspectives impact on a range of topics, including:
  • how different cultural manifestations are valued in the contemporary world and how it has been valued historically
  • how cultural policy aims to democratise access to culture
  • how cultural industries operate, their strategies and main challenges
  • how cultural policy has developed internationally and in the Nordic countries
  • how culture is produced, distributed and consumed and the different actors and agents herein.
  • how public authorities utilise cultural initiatives to solve societal challenges in other areas and to contribute to economic growth

Skills

The candidate can

  • Communicate topics related to cultural value and democracy to both peers and non-specialists, including an organisation’s stakeholder, in written and oral format of dicussion
  • independently apply relevant theories and methodologies in order to analyse relevant issues within cultural policy including how cultural valuation is embedded in cultural policy and cultural leadership
  • reflect over and question the assumptions behind democracy and cultural policy and identify eventual dissonance between rhetoric and practice within these areas.

Competences

The candidate can:

  • critically and independently execute projects and tasks related to cultural policy issues
  • take responsibility for their own professional development and vocational specialisation in the area of cultural policy and cultural economics.
  • be able to start an independent research project thematised around cultural policy or cultural economics

Innhold

Content

This module’s overarching theme is cultural policy, including the democratisation and valuation of culture, cultural industry, and cultural economics. Both cultural policy and culture is in this context made subject to wide definitions. The module will deal with fundamental cultural policy challenges and questions. At the same time, most of the issues discussed will be of direct relevance for people seeking careers in the cultural sector. Cultural policy is in this context understood as the promotion or prohibition of cultural practices and values by governments, corporations, other institutions and individuals. The module will focus on production, distribution and consumption of culture and its conditions within both a public and private context. The cultural economics aspect of the module will deal with culture in a social and welfare economic perspective and amongst other things focus on market failure within the cultural sector and the economic evaluations of cultural policy.

Arbeids- og læringsformer

Teaching and learning

The teaching will primarily be seminar-based where a significant degree of active student participation will be expected, including student presentations and active participation in discussions and debates. The learning will also partly be case-based where students apply knowledge, competences and skills on their cases. Such work will both take place during and between seminars. There will also be tutorials and feedback-sessions for smaller groups of students in addition to the seminar-time. The module will also include study visits to cultural organisations in Norway and, if possible, abroad.

Vurderingsformer

Examination

  • Trial lecture lasting between 40 – 45 minutes or oral examination.

The candidate is free to choose whether they want trial lecture or oral examiniation. The assignment for a trial lecture will be given by the institute. The candidate informs the institute when they register for the examination which exam-form they have chosen.
