Læringsutbytte

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

  • Written and verbal communication in English
  • Effective communication in the business world and international environments
  • Business English, and knowledge of the contexts in which Business English is used
  • Social and cultural conditions in English-speaking countries

Skills:

  • Written and verbal communication in English
  • Ability to express opinions and discuss ethical issues in English on the basis of syllabus texts
  • Ability to write on topics in relation to effective communication
  • Make business presentations and develop professional business documents

General competence:

  • Written and verbal communication in English in work-related and international contexts
  • Rhetorical and communicative ability

Innhold

The course will focus primarily on oral activities. The following topics will be included: perspectives on and barriers to communication; interviewing; preparing and giving presentations; developing a CV in English; managing meetings and negotiations; rhetorical strategies. Further, students will gain insight into aspects of social and cultural conditions in English-speaking countries.

Arbeids- og læringsformer

Instruction is given in the autumn semester. Lectures, group work, individual and group assignments, oral presentations, email communication, case-studies and discussions.

Vurderingsformer

At least 75% classroom attendance over the semester is required to take the final exam.

  • Assignments (4-5), counts 50 %
  • Oral exam, 4 hours, counts 50 %

Students must receive passing grades on all assignments in order to receive a final passing grade for the course. Graded marks.
