Advanced High Voltage Technology EPEV3116

Læringsutbytte

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate can:

  • Understand the physics of breakdown mechanisms in air and SF6
  • Explain lightning phenomena
  • Understand how the ZnO surge arresters function
  • Explain partial discharge degradation mechanism
  • Describe overvoltages and insulation coordination on transmission networks
  • Describe circuit breakers
  • Describe the components, manufacturing process, failure processes and testing of polymeric insulated power cables
  • Describe different numerical methods in electrical field calculation

Skills

The candidate can:

  • Measure partial discharges
  • Participate in planning and specification of substations and cable installations in high voltage grids
  • Participate in design and development work on switchgear and cables

Innhold

The course describes and explains air and SF6 as main insulation gases in the high voltage network. The network is highly exposed to lightning and the protection of components hit by lightning overvoltages will be explained.

The course gives a comprehensive introduction to the technologies that are employed in switching equipment and underground power cables. The switching equipment sections cover switching over-voltages, the electric arc, arcing media (SF6, vacuum, air, oil), breaker designs, as well as gas insulated and air insulated substations. The cable part describes various designs and technologies used for underground cables, power rating evaluations, corrosion, and cable termination and splicing.

Arbeids- og læringsformer

The learning outcomes will be ensured through a combination of lectures, exercises and laboratory work.

Vurderingsformer

Laboratory work must be approved.

Final written examination (100%). Individual grades A-F.

Det tas forbehold om mindre justeringer i planen.
