Power Electronics and Electrical Drives EPE2116

Læringsutbytte

A candidate who has completed the course successfully will have a learning outcome in the form of acquired knowledge, skills, and general competence, as described below.
Knowledge

  • explain different types of power semiconductors, their mode of operation and important properties(diodes, thyristors, GTOs, IGBTs and MOSFETs). In addition to standard Siliconbased semiconductors,SiC (Silicon Carbide) semiconductors will be introduced.
  • explain line-commutated and self-commutated rectifiers (AC to uncontrolled and controlled DC)
  • explain switch-mode converters and inverters (DC-DC, DC-AC)
  • explain DC-motor drives, induction motor drives and synchronous motor drives

Skills

  • design of power converters
  • design and select electrical drives based on the best option
  • control of electrical drives (e.g., vector control, direct torque control)

General competence

  • be able to assemble a working power electronic applications and electrical drive application including its control

Innhold

The course gives an introduction to semiconductor devices.
It continues to show how to build generic power electronic circuits which then can be used in power supply
applications. Finally the students learn about electrical drive applications and its control.
The course comes with accompanying laboratory exercises.

Arbeids- og læringsformer

Lectures, exercises, demonstrations and laboratory exercises.

Vurderingsformer

The laboratory work must be approved as entry condition for the individual examination.

  • Individual examination (100%)

Individual grades (A-F).

Det tas forbehold om mindre justeringer i planen.
