Læringsmål

To have firm knowledge on municipal sewage treatment and some insight to industrial effluent treatment.

The students have to be able to choose proper treatment technology to the specific national requirements (regulation with limits). It may be their duty to design the main parameters of the technologies, estimate the mass of the bio-product residue of the treatment and design its further utilisation.

Innhold

· Source of wastewater, qualification, general chemical and biological control.
· Loads from municipal and industrial sources, main quality parameters.
· Limits for industrial discharge for protecting POTWs and contamination of their solid residue versus discharge limits.
· Separate pre-treatment or treatment of industrial effluents.
· Basics of suspended growth and film biology.
· Kinetics of biological degradation, and yield of excess sludge.
· Plug flow vs CSTR; biofilm and hybrid systems
· Aeration design; air supply and distribution into the water phase.
· Design of biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal /nutrient removal.
· New possibilities of N removal via nitrite (SHARON, Anammox)
· Models and simulation of the activated sludge /AS/ systems.
· Possibilities of intensified anaerobic treatment in food processing effluent treatment.
· Sludge digestion. Removal of ammonia and phosphorus from digester liquor.
· Design of sludge digestion and dewatering.
· Natural treatment processes – phytotechnology in sewage treatment.
· Combination of advanced technologies with natural systems.
· Special treatment possibilities for hardly or nondegradable industrial contaminants.
· Pre-oxidation and other combined methods.
· Sludge incineration or composting with bio-solid reuse
