Sedimentology 4610

Læringsmål

The course is devoted to the different processes influencing recent sediments. How different major processes such as sea level, climate changes etc. affects the sedimentation in aquatic ecosystems. Sediment structures, stratification and erosion, - deposition- and sediment transport processes will be discussed. The students will learn about the factors important for formation of sediments, sedimentation processes and different sediment types. An important topic will be quality assessment by using sediment data.

At the end of the course students will have the knowledge and tools to understand the processes going on in recent sediments and the effects of different environmental conditions on biotic and abiotic processes. Thestudents will be able to:

· identify main structural components in sediments

· understand the different abiotic and biotic processes influencing recent sediments

· carryout important laboratory- and field methods according to national and international standards.

· use sediment data in quality assessment
