Fiction and film: reception and adaptation 2027

After completing this course you have learned how to come to terms with the relationship between literature and film. The aim of the course is not to decide which version is ‘best’, but rather to discuss how the literary and filmic versions differ and why. Film is one of the most important forms of aesthetic expression in our time. Adaptation is also film, and many of the best (and best known) films are actually adaptations.
Innhold
Discussing a selection of literary texts and film adaptations of these texts, this course gives an introduction to problems, and possibilities, concerning the transition from literary fiction to fiction presented through the medium of film. Although literature and film are very different media, operating in dissimilar ways and producing various kinds of artistic effect, they are both narrative forms of communication. Thus, narrative theory forms a theoretical basis for discussion not only of the literary texts but of the corresponding film versions as well. Film adaptation of drama differs slightly from adaptation of narrative fiction, since a play is (in most cases) composed to be performed. Some drama and performance theory will also be discussed.
Organisering
3 hrs/ week, 15 weeks pr semester, fall semester: lectures and discussions.
Film sessions: the filmic adaptations are considered mandatory and will be played at a fixed time on campus localities, but students may of course watch them on their own.
Vurderingsformer
Term paper 40 %; final written school examination 60%
All assessed elements of the course must be passed to pass the course.
