Læringsmål

The main objective of this course is to provide:
· The basic knowledge of environmental monitoring system with attention to chemical monitoring - its main tasks, objectives, implementation principles and programmes.
· The information about the most common and most hazardous pollutants entering inland waters and sources of their origin.

Student will be able to provide chemical monitoring.

Innhold

· Basic aspects of water chemistry.

· Monitoring definition, tasks and objectives. Baseline, background and integrate monitoring.

· Monitoring implementation principles and programmes.

· Monitoring institutions and financing.

· Characterization of environmental risk factors, their sources of origin. Short introduction with the main physical -, chemical- and biological stressors.

· Global, regional and local monitoring. National monitoring programmes. Case studies.

· Characterization of the main chemical stressors (pesticides, phenols, dioxins, furans, heavy metals, PCB, etc.)
toxic substances and water pollution,
distribution of chemicals in the environment,
concept of fate and life cycle of chemicals in the environment,
environmental contamination with metals, chlororganic substances, polyaromatic hydrogen carbons.

· Chemical status of waters – rivers, lakes, groundwater.

· The main principles of chemical monitoring.

· Methods of analysis of chemical pollutants.

· Assessment of monitoring data, statistical analyses and modelling.
