Handling of Particulate Solids FM3206

Læringsmål

The students are introduced to the field of powder technology, and its importance for the process industry. Particulate solids represent 50 – 80 % of materials used or produced by typical large process industrial companies, as well as metal, mineral, food, pharmaceutical and other industries. In spite of this, powders are poorly described and understood, and few universities and colleges are offering this subject as part of MSc studies. The students following this course should develop an understanding of the basic concepts of powder technology, and should avoid the obvious mistakes often seen in industry when it comes to equipment for handling, storing and transporting, or for other processes where particulate solids are involved.

Innhold

The role of powder technology in the process industry. Characterization of particulate solids for quality control and choice/dimensioning of equipment. Sampling and sample preparation. Particle size analysis. Design of silos based on measured powder properties. Segregation of particulate solids. Discharge equipment. Silo/feeder interfaces. Choice and use of mechanical and pneumatic conveying systems for powders. Solid/gas separations using cyclones and filters.

Organisering

Lectures, theoretical and laboratory exercises.

Vurderingsformer

The final test counts 100%.

To be admitted for the exam, two laboratory exercises and 5 out of 8 ordinary exercises have to be passed.

Det tas forbehold om mindre justeringer i planen.
