Transport Processes with CFD PT1006

Læringsmål

Get a systematic overview of material, energy and momentum balance equations and transfer rate equations (transport processes). Be able to use these equations for dimensioning of pipes, pumps and heat exchangers.

Learn to derive the conservation equations of fluid dynamics and to solve them using numerical methods and algorithms. Learn how to model turbulence.

Innhold

Thermal conduction. Internal and external forced convection. Thermal radiation. Heat exchangers. Mass diffusion. (These subjects, covering 4 credits, are in common with the course Water Processes and Ecology.) Free convection. Boiling and condensation. Dimensional analysis. Dimensioning of cylinder walls.

Derivation of general mass, momentum and energy conservation equations. Boundary conditions for the conservation equations. Turbulence and its modeling. Numerical methods and algorithms for solving the conservation equations. Solving fluid dynamic problems with CFD software such as Fluent.

Organisering

Lectures, exercises, laboratory work and use of CFD software.

Vurderingsformer

The final test counts 60 %; the mid-term test counts 25 %; laboratory work and CFD assignments count 15 %. Grades A-F are used. To pass the course, the final test must be passed. One assignment (in the Transport Processes part of the course) is given on a pass/fail basis; to pass the course, this assignment must be passed.

Det tas forbehold om mindre justeringer i planen.
