Knowledge
The candidate:
- has specialized knowledge in combustion theory and methods used in analyzing combustion systems, pollutions due to combustion and process safety by combining thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and chemical reactions
- knows the basic principles of how process safety analysis is implemented in industrial projects
- has knowledge of the hazard potential of handling flammable, pressurized and toxic materials in the petrochemical and the process industry
- masters the terminology of process safety and combustion
Skills
The candidate will:
- is able to estimate chemical equilibrium, reaction rates, adiabatic flame temperature, laminar flame structures, ignition energy, droplet combustion, length of and radiation from jet flames, blast waves, gas dispersion and leak rates for simple cases
- is able to apply combustion theory in experiments and technical projects
- knows how to use computer tools, for example Matlab, to solve problems in this field
- is able to find, analyze and critically review different sources of information in this field
General competence
The candidate will:
- is able to view industrial safety and emissions from combustion in an ethical context
- is able to analyze combustion and safety challenges in general
- is able to apply acquired knowledge and skills to solve advanced tasks and projects in new areas such as chemical reactor design, safety and CFD
- is able to communicate and discuss - with experts as well as with the general public - technical problems, analyses and conclusions within the area of energy and environment

The course consists of the following topics:
- Fuels
- Thermodynamics of combustion
- Chemical kinetics
- Review of transport equations and properties
- Ignition phenomena
- Premixed flames
- Non-premixed flames (diffusion flames)
- Droplet evaporation and combustion
- Emissions
- Sonic flow, shock waves, and detonations
- Physical models used for hazard assessment in safety studies such as fires and explosions
- Introduction to CFD codes for dispersion and gas explosion simulations

Arbeids- og læringsformer
Lectures, exercises, and laboratory work are used.
Lectures are used to highlight the main topics of the course, facilitating knowledge.
By working on the problems given in the exercises, the students will gain skills as well as knowledge (a higher level of comprehension).
One laboratory task is given. This will give the students general competence in the form of teamwork as well as report writing.
Vurderingsformer
Written mid semester examination counts 30 % and written final examination counts 70 % of the grade. No study aids are permitted.
Det tas forbehold om mindre justeringer i planen.
