Handling of Particulate Solids FM3206

Læringsutbytte

A candidate who has passed the course will have a learning outcome in the form of acquired knowledge, skills, and general competence, as described below.

Knowledge

The candidate will:

  • Understand the importance of powder technology in various industries, and have a basic understanding of the most important concepts of this technology
  • Understand the most important ways of characterization of powders, including single particles as well as powder in bulk
  • Understand the importance of concepts like fluidization and challenges like segregation of powders
  • Be aware of the main challenges when choosing transport and storage solutions for particulate solids
  • Understand the basics of what makes flow of powders different from flow of gases and liquids

Skills

The candidate will:

  • Be able to identify reasons why equipment does not work the way it is expected, and find proper solutions
  • Be able to choose optimal equipment based on characteristic properties of a powder, such as designing an optimal silo based on critical silo parameters
  • Be able to evaluate equipment offered for new installations and ensure that it will fulfil its purposes
  • Be able to decide when external expertise has to be sought
  • Be able to work safely in the powder laboratory, in accordance with HES procedures

General competence

Innhold

  • The role of powder technology in the process industry
  • Characterization of particulate solids for quality control and choice/dimensioning of equipment
  • Sampling and sample preparation
  • Particle size analysis
  • Design of silos based on measured powder properties
  • Segregation of particulate solids
  • Discharge equipment
  • Silo/feeder interfaces
  • Choice and use of mechanical and pneumatic conveying systems for powders
  • Solid/gas separations using cyclones and filters

Arbeids- og læringsformer

Lectures, based on lecture notes that will be distributed as hand outs during the course, theoretical exercises covering most of the content will be given, with guidance.
Laboratory exercises with guidance will cover particle size and flow property measurements.

Vurderingsformer

The final test counts 100 %.
To be admitted for the exam, two laboratory exercises and 5 out of 8 ordinary exercises have to be passed.

Det tas forbehold om mindre justeringer i planen.
