Applied Aquatic microbiology 4608
Læringsmål
The aim is to understand the drinking water directive and do the microbiological tests according to this. In the laboratory the students shall detect the index bacteria and understand why they are tested for, and their connection with the pathogens. The course contents are mainly practical laboratory work in combination with lectures.
The students will understand the connection between pathogenic- and index bacteria. They will get training in detecting the index bacteria from water and understand the strength and weakness with the methods and use of index bacteria. They will be trained to understand the drinking water directive for management. They will get knowledge about the water borne pathogens.
Innhold
It will be given overview lectures covering the water borne pathogens as Campylobacter and Salmonella and the index bacteria. Lectures for understanding the drinking water directive are given. Laboratory work to detect the index bacteria coliforms, E. coli, intestinal enterococci, Clostridium perfringens and total counts according to international standards are carried out. Using Petrifilm for detecting the total count and E. coli from water will also be demonstrated.
Organisering
The course will be intensively with a combination of lectures and laboratory work. The students will be grouped and two students are working together in the laboratory.
Vurderingsformer
Individual “multiple choice”.
Laboratory report prepared by the two students working together in the laboratory.
