Gas Purification and Energy Optimization PEF2006

Læringsmål

Get an overview of technological options to solve gas purification problems. Be able to select purification methods for a specific pollution problem and theoretical tools to choose processes and combinations of processes.

Get a survey of systematic methods of optimization of process plants. Be able to use these methods to calculate minimum energy, equipment area, equipment volume and total cost.

Innhold

Global air pollution. Emission measurements. Purification methods for particles: Mechanical devices, wet scrubbers, filters. Purification methods for gases: Absorption, adsorption, combustion, membrane separation. Regeneration methods: Distillation and desorption. Energy optimization of CO2 removal.

Systematic methods for the generation of process flowsheets for new processes and modification of existing plants. For this purpose, the process simulation tool HYSYS is used. Subtopics include the structure of separator systems, heat recovery and the design of heat exchanger networks (pinch technology), optimal utility systems, heat pumps, power production and economic trade-offs (investment versus operating cost).

Organisering

Lectures and exercises/assignments.

Vurderingsformer

The final test counts 70 %; mid-term tests, exercises and/or assignments count 30 %. Grades A-F are used. To pass the course, the final test must be passed.

Det tas forbehold om mindre justeringer i planen.
