Modeling and Simulation of Hydro Power Systems SCEV3210

Læringsmål

Learn how to develop mathematical models of a hydro power plant. Learn how to describe the mathematical model using object oriented modelling tools, and how to implement such a model in a chosen modelling and simulation tool. Understand how mathematical models for other types of systems can be described and implemented in object oriented modelling tools.

Innhold

“Modelling and Simulation of Hydro Power Systems” includes the prediction of precipitation, storage, transformation (melting), and hydrology of precipitation, the accumulation of water in reservoirs, transport of water to the turbine (conduits/tunnel, etc.), the transformation of mechanical power to electrical power in the generator, transforming the electrical power (various voltages), distribution of power in the net, and the load/consumer. In “Modelling and Simulation of Hydro Power Systems” you will learn about tools to optimise, control and operate the energy production. Specifically, the course deals with:

  • Formulation of mathematical models across different physical domains (e.g., mechanical, electrical, hydrological).
  • Development of a simple hydro power plant model which can be extended to more complex and accurate models.
  • Introduction to the object-oriented modelling language Modelica.
  • Implementation of the hydro power plant model in Modelica.
  • The benefit of using object orientation when implementing such models, with special emphasis on how the model can be gradually extended.

Part of the course will deal with building/extending a library of complex models for a hydro power systems using a Modelica computer tool. The library can contain all parts starting from the rain fall to the electric power that can be used. An important element is analysing simulation results with respect to plausibility.

Organisering

Lectures, exercises, and the use of relevant software for PCs. Intermediate tests such as group projects with oral presentation and/or mid term tests will be used.

Vurderingsformer

Grading is based on intermediate tests which counts 30% and a final test which counts 70% in the final grade.

Det tas forbehold om mindre justeringer i planen.
