Learning outcomes

The course will balance theory and fieldtrips in order to give the students an understanding of the important role “Friluftsliv” (Open Air Life) has played and still plays in the Norwegian society. Special emphasize will be placed on educational – and health issues.

Knowledge
During the course the student will be given an overview of the history and development of open air activities in Norway, and how “Friluftsliv” influences today`s society. The students will acquire knowledge about nature management in Norway, and the challenging balance between modern activities in the outdoors and sustainable development. By gaining experience and knowledge about the potential in Friluftsliv they will get a better understanding of how outdoor activities may be used as a health promoting activity.

Skills

Be able to practice basic Friluftsliv in the nearby surroundings

Be able to understand and discuss the potential of Friluftsliv according to physical and mental health.

Be able to explain the history of Friluftsliv in Norway

Be able to understand the challenges between central and local organized nature management

Be able to understand the importance of contact with nature for children

Be able to explain how Friluftsliv is used in the Norwegian school system

General competencies:

Be able to explain the history and development of Friluftsliv

Be able to understand and communicate the potential of Friluftsliv in health as well as in children`s development

Be able to understand and discuss environmental challenges connected to nature management

Innhold

Experiental learning is an integral part of this course, including fieldtrips to different nature areas. The students will be presented with attitudes and understanding of nature, traditional exploitation of nature, cultural traces and heritage.

The hikes are planned in order to give students a better understanding of what Friluftsliv actually is. Several of the issues that are focused on in the lectures will also be discussed during fieldtrips. Diversity, right of public access to open country and “no trace hiking” will be reviewed

Open air cooking is a part of some of the hikes, as well as other ways of making a hike interesting.

Lectures, individual study, field trips. English is the course language.

Vurderingsformer

3 days, graded take-home paper. Compulsory field trips.
