Læringsutbytte
The aim of the course is to provide the students with a critical understanding of pedagogic and didactic issues relevant for paddling activities. By gaining experience in the various settings, they will be given an opportunity to develop their basic teaching-, outdoor leader skills and knowledge within the context of the water environments. They shall learn to set their goals in keeping with their own competence and work independently in order to develop their skills.
Knowledge
- Knowledge about trip planning and how to choose destinations and routes in accordance with one’s ability, safety and realistic goals in water environments.
- Knowledge about navigation.
- Knowledge about how to find save locations for paddle activities and establishing a campsite in the different nature types.
- Knowledge about nature- and cultural topics related to waterways.
- Knowledge about didactics: guidelines for outings, procedures, organisation, working methods, management and leadership.
- Knowledge about the complexity of the interaction between learning and contexts and the range of ways in which participants can influence the learning process.
Skills
- Be able to lift, carry and launch the canoe
- Be able to do efficient forward paddling
- Be able to steer the canoe
- Be able to manoeuvre in a confined space
- Be able to move sideways
- Be able to preventing a capsize
- Be able to turn
- Be able to Capsize, swim, self- and peer rescue
- Be able to use map and compass
- Be able to establishing a campsite, setting up a tent, lavo and lean to shelter
- Be able to keep the surplus on paddling trips.
General competencies
- Be able to lead canoe activities on flat water (1 star BCU system)
- Be able to participate as a member on overnight paddling trips (2 star BCU System)
- Be able to demonstrate effective communication and presentation skills on the water.
- Be able to demonstrate responsibility for their learning and continuing personal and professional development in water activities.
Innhold
Leadership skills and theories are introduced in practical ways through a series of outdoor expeditions and field experiences.
The importance of having a surplus of energy in the wilderness, planning trips in accordance
with one’s ability, choosing trip area according to ability, safety and objectives.
Taking responsibility for one’s own learning.
Outings in the wild: laws and regulations; the importance of leaving no traces.
Planning trips, paddling expeditions in groups, safety and trip guidelines.
Paddling canoes and easy rivers and lakes, basic paddling techniques.
Assessing rivers.
Saving oneself in calm water and in rapids.
Lifesaving in calm water and in rapids.
Shelter and making camp: choosing a campsite and making camp, canoe-bivouac.
Orienteering and route choice, maps and compasses, choice of destination.
Food, campfires and cooking utensils.
Hygiene and first-aid near the water.
Arbeids- og læringsformer
Lectures, group projects and practical exercises, problem-oriented guidance on trips in various natural environments. The overnight-trips are mandatory: 5 days with an instructor.

Written exams, individually and in groups, graded mark.
