Gas Technology and Process Equipment PT2006

Læringsmål

The candidate will learn the basic for calculation of the main dimensions, selection and modelling of different process equipments. Important processes for industry based on gas as raw material and gas as energy source will be discusssed in depth. The types of process equipment studied are heat transfer equipment, rotating machinery and pipe systems. The candidate will get an overview of industry processes and energy systems for gas.

Innhold

Gas is used for heating and energy production (for instance gas power plant with CO2 capturing) and as raw material in chemical industry. The course will focus on the processes important including the process equipment used.

a)Heat transfer equipment (15 %): Different types of heat exchangers are described and calculated, and applications are discussed. Heat transfer by conduction, convection, boiling, condensation and radiation. Problems with fouling, corrosion and flow induced vibration are discussed.

b)Rotating machinery (25%): Pumps, fans, compressors, steam- and gas turbines are described and calculated. Both axial- and radial machinery. Selection, application and construction. Also impellers for chemical reactors are included.

c) Pipe systems (10 %): This part is connected to the parts above since the units are connected by pipes and channels, and tubes are parts of the units. Pipe systems. Pressure drop in one and multi phase pipe flow. Flow patterns (stratified, annular, slug and dispersed flow). Interactions between the phases are discussed.

d)Processing, transport and distribution/use (50%): This part of the course includes, gas power plants, natural gas as raw material in process industry (eg. production of ammonium and polyolefines), CO2 handling, problems in connection with storage of gas, gas dynamics, LNG (liquid natural gas), LPG (liquid petroleum gas), GTL (gas to liquid). Process flow diagrams (PFD) and piping and instumentation diagrams (P&ID) will be explained.

Part a) and parts of part d) are in common with Energy- and Biotechnology.

Organisering

Lectures, exercises and the use of relevant software for PCs.

Vurderingsformer

The final test and the intermediate tests count 70% and 30%, respectively.
