Y-VEI (Civil Engineering for applicants with certificate of completed apprenticeship), bachelor

Target Group and Admission Requirements

Vocational line of study with the relevant trade certificate based on foundation courses in building and construction subjects and technical building and construction subjects.

Aim of the Programme

Our objective is to train engineers who can solve practical problems in fields such as land use planning, mapping and surveying, water supplies, drainage and transportation engineering. The study programme also provides courses which are more general, such as construction-, production- and house-building techniques and project management. IT is used extensively, particularly CAD.

As a civil engineer, you may work in engineering-consultation offices, in construction and contracting firms, and in the public sector. Tasks may involve static calculations, construction drawings, project descriptions with cost estimates, expansion plans, management and economics. In the public sector, duties may be associated with local plans, surveying, road construction, water supplies, sewage and drainage, renovation or questions of pollution. Depending on your choice of elective courses, you may also work in construction, community planning or as a construction consultant.

Further Education opportunities

Upon completing the programme (BSc Civil Engineering), you may seek admission to a two-year Master’s programme in Energy and Environmental Technology or Process Technology (civil-engineer programme) at Telemark University College or Master's programmes in technology at other university colleges and universities in Norway and abroad.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

BYY5007 Dimensioning and Concrete Structures and BYY5107 House Planning in the 5th semester and PRH606 Main Project BY6 in the 6th semester may be replaced by FB5106 Student Business Venture.

FBV5006 Mathematics III is recommended for students who intend to continue on to a Master’s degree in Energy and Environmental Technology.

One may apply to have other courses approved as replacements for elective courses at Telemark University College and other institutions of education.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PROGRAMME MAY BE MODIFIED AT ANY TIME.

This is a new professional and pedagogical plan adapted to the student’s vocational background and training. The programme compensates for inadequate skills in mathematics, physics, Norwegian and English by bypassing some of the basic technical courses and elective courses in the programme. In the building and construction subject the Y-VEI students will be integrated with those who have met entrance requirements through their general upper-secondary education.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The Bachelor’s programme in the Faculty of Technology is project-oriented, that is, many of the courses are conducted as projects. This pedagogical method gives students greater responsibility for their own learning as well as experience with problem analysis, seeking information and problem solving. Work is done in groups, often in close cooperation with local businesses. The group produces a project report which is submitted, presented and defended in an oral examination. Most subjects are taken over one semester with various tests and final examinations.

Students will be offered an opportunity to study abroad during the programme. Telemark University College has exchange agreements with colleges and universities in Belgium, England, France, Italy, China, Nepal, Portugal, Sri-Lanka, Spain, Germany and the USA.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
