Introduction
Students will work with various image media, including pencil and charcoal drawings, and photos and digital images. ICT will be focused on as an aid for sourcing information and direct communication, as an all-round tool in various creative processes, and as an independent means of expression.
The study programme aims mainly to qualify students for teaching in the area of arts, crafts and design in upper secondary schools in specialisation studies, and also in the first year of upper secondary in general studies in design and handicrafts, and media and communication. The study programme also qualifies students for teaching arts and crafts in primary and lower secondary schools, and folk high schools. It will provide students with basic knowledge within the subject area, and enable them to participate in development activities in the subject area in schools.
The study programme is based on common goals in the national curriculum for teacher training in design, arts and crafts established by the Ministry of Education and Research 3 April 2003.
Target Group and Admission Requirements
The study programme is primarily intended as subject specialisation in the Bachelor’s degree programme, Subject Teacher: Education in the Arts, or as the fourth year of study in the same programme. It may also be included as the third year of study in the Bachelor’s degree programme, Visual Arts and Design, or as an independent study programme. Admission requirements are a minimum of 60 ECTS in arts, crafts and design subjects or equivalent at university college level.
Aim of the Programme
In this study programme, students will gain experience within the subject field, and develop their ability to recognise opportunities and possibilities offered by creative activity, teaching and dissemination. The study programme will further develop students’ awareness of the potential and values of the specialisation subject, in which people, learning, culture and environment are vital components. The study programme will stimulate curiosity, interest in research and joy of the subject, and encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and learning environment.
Students will:
- work with drawing, images, and communication and images in a pedagogical context.
- develop their knowledge by working with drawing and images, and theory.
- strengthen their visual, aesthetic and communicative skills.
- emphasise analytical work with images as a means of acquiring knowledge.
- develop their own creative ability using images.
- gain knowledge of images in a cultural context.
- expand their knowledge of art, specifically in the area of contemporary art.
- gain knowledge and experience of professional research and development work.
- be challenged to take responsibility for their own learning and learning environment.
- learn to use digital image tools.
- become producers of cultural goods and participants in cultural activities.
Curriculum and structure

Drawing and the student’s own work is a fundamental part of the study programme.
The study programme is divided into 6 courses. The courses will be assessed and approved before the student will be allowed to complete the last course in the study programme, the Bachelor’s Assignment. The courses cannot be taken as independent courses outside the programme.
The courses are:
- Drawing and Colour, 15 ECTS
- Film and Video, 10 ECTS
- Scientific Theory, R & D, 5 ECTS
- Analytical Practice, 10 ECTS
- Subject and Professional Didactic Practice, 5 ECTS
- Final Project/Bachelor’s Assignment, 15 ECTS
The courses are taught in the spring semester (30 ECTS) and autumn semester (30 ECTS).
Subject content may be distributed across several courses and approached in different ways.
Subject and professional didactics is included in the study programme as a part of all the courses.
Some of the subject material may be considered common for all of the specialisation programmes. This will be mediated largely through seminars/lectures.
In addition to the study programme’s courses, activities such as ‘Open Door’ and ‘Research Days’ will be included, and possibly other activities.
Student Council
Students will be expected to choose their own Student Council consisting of 2-3 students who will function as intermediaries between the teaching team and the class in matters such as the planning and execution of class activities.

Teaching and Learning Methods
Individual work by students constitutes the central learning method in the study programme. Through guidance in the workshop sessions, theory and reflection will be related to the students’ own creative work. The study programme includes lectures, discussions, demonstrations, seminars, study groups, projects, visual presentations and other methods.
Drawing and image communication utilises creative work on the one hand and subject theory and didactics on the other. Work which involves continual follow-up creates an experience of wholeness and progression and is an essential work method in the process from idea to finished product. Different principles and working methods may include analytical, intuitive, physical and dramatic approaches. What needs to be emphasised in each course will be reviewed periodically. Each course has a limited content, but the topics in one course may throw light on areas in another course. Key issues may be treated several times from different approaches.
Visual presentation is an essential part of the academic work processes and projects. Presentations and exhibitions may be both oral and audiovisual. Documentation of creative processes and development work will be emphasised. In this work, written reports and photo and videos may be used. Handwriting is related to drawing, and is an essential visual, and personal means of communication. Consequently, submitted written work will be both written by hand and in digital form.
Theory and Practical Training
Roughly five weeks of the academic year are reserved for the course Subject and Professional Didactic Practice. Three of these weeks are associated with teaching in upper secondary schools, folk high schools or other educational environments.
All the students who are not enrolled on a three-year subject-teacher programme should normally complete a period of work-experience at a business or complete project practice. These students may also apply to complete their practice period at a school if desired. The application must be sent to the programme coordinator or the practice office.
Assessment Methods
Students are personally responsible for orienting themselves about assignment requirements, deadlines and programme requirements, etc. All the assignments must be completed and submitted before the deadline specified in the semester plan/year-plan/period plan before the student will be allowed to take the final course, the Bachelor’s Assignment. All the courses in the study programme must receive passing marks before the student may be awarded a diploma for successfully completing the study programme.
The course Subject and Professional Didactic Practice will be assessed pass/fail.
All the other courses will be given a letter grade, on a scale from A to F, where A is the highest possible grade, and E is the lowest passing grade.
The courses may be assessed in different ways, including portfolio assessment and written examinations (please refer to the individual course descriptions).
The course grades and the title of the Bachelor’s Assignment will be entered on the diploma. Students who do not complete the study programme will receive a transcript of the grades for the courses they have passed.
